| Little Mountaineer League was formed in 1948 at which time four teams were organized. The sponsors of the teams were the Lions, Reaser and Danneker, American Legion and Chopack. The territorial rights included Nesbit, Duboistown, Armstrong Township and the Borough of South Williamsport. As more boys became interested in playing baseball, they all could not be accommodated on Lions Field so the rights to the Nesbit and Duboistown players was given to the Newberry League which was just forming.
As the years went by, we were invited by Little League Headquarters to join them in a Senior League program. The games were played on Keliher Field, now known as Koser Field, located on East Second Avenue in South Williamsport. The territorial rights for the Senior Division were to include all boys in the South Williamsport School District.
Little League Headquarters asked Little Mountaineer to join them in forming a Boy’s Big League Program which we readily agreed to do. These games were played on fields at the Little League Complex. Did you know that Little Mountaineer League produced Pennsylvania’s First Big League Champion?
Today South Little League (formerly Little Mountaineer Little League) has 200+ kids playing in their program, including children in baseball, softball, and the Challenger divisions. |
